{Garrett County vs South Dakota}

Friday afternoon, October 4th I received an email from Kent saying that they had been hit with their first South Dakota blizzard already!

Visibility was terrible, and they were already without power.

 

 This was the view when Kent opened the garage door today (Saturday) -- still no electric!
 

Brayden was having fun with his shovel.

 

The Yukon is basically buried.  The drift in the background is actually the road in front of their house.

In contrast --
this was one of those days that its great to live in Garrett County

 

 Autumn colors...an unusual 82 degrees...a cool breeze...
 

 Kaleb mowed and trimmed the lawn
 

 Dad, Katrina, and Kaleb dug the rest of the potatoes.
 

 I grilled hamburgers...
 

 and we actually ate supper (with corn on the cob) out on the deck!!!!

We understand that this in not typical October weather in Garrett County, but we loved

every sweaty minute!

{One VERY Busy Saturday}

  

 September 14th turned out to be a VERY busy day!
A neighbor had some trees cut down that he allowed us to cut up for some much needed firewood, and the sweet corn was ready to freeze.

 

 We had some help from the King boys.  Michael helped Tim with the wood.

 

 Katrina, Kaleb, Kaitlyn, and Philip husked the corn.
 

 

 The girls and I worked on the corn while the guys worked on the firewood.
 

 

 

 

 

     
After the corn was finished, Katrina and I helped with the racking / clean up.
 

 From nearly empty to this in one day!  We finished the rest Monday evening and added almost another two rows.
 

 Kaleb and Philip loaded, unloaded, and stacked the wood - load after load after load!

When we stopped to eat pizza around 9:00pm, everyone was almost too tired to eat. :)
We were grateful for all the work that was accomplished that day, and for the store of
corn in the freezer and firewood for the winter!!

Dad dug up some of the potatoes in the garden and they are HUGE!!

 

This picture doesn't even begin to show how big these things are!!

 

Like two softballs put together!  

 

I made potato salad on Saturday, and I only used 2 potatoes and got 8 cups of cubed potatoes!

And I was taking that to a potluck dinner, otherwise it would take us days to eat that much!!!

 

Some of the potatoes are hollow inside and bad, but some of them (like this one) are just fine!!!

 

That's a home-grown potato! 

Pappy would be proud!
