{A Day At The Airport}

On Saturday, August 11th, Mom, Dad, Me (Kaleb), and Katrina went up to the Garrett County Airport for its 50th anniversary celebration. They had many different planes and a few helicopters on display.
We had a lot of fun, except that because we were on the top of a mountain
the wind was blowing and it got pretty cold.
This is an AT-6 Texan, a WWII fighter. They had three of them here.

A club called CAMS (no idea what that stands for) did an R/C demo with planes and helicopters.
This is a Eurocopter Dauphin owned and operated by the State Police.

They didn't stay long because they got called to an accident.

There was also a classic car show with many different kinds of old and new cars and trucks.

This was one of our favorites.

This truck's name was Casper!

The people who owned these planes were giving rides but when we asked, they said it was $299 per ride! Needless to say none of us took a plane ride that day.

People were taking off and landing the whole time we were there.

An Oakland police officer showing people some equipment.

The man in the middle is Bill Hetrick, one of my employers.

This is a Robinson R22. They used it for a candy drop, where they flew by and dumped bags of candy out!

This is a UH-72 Lakota Army helicopter.

Watching the R/C demonstration.

The T-6's did an airshow during part of the afternoon.

The pilot (background) was teasing me about my Air Force hat when I got in the Army helicopter.
They didn't stick around long.

By the end of the afternoon everybody started flying away!

Looks like it was alot of fun! I'm not sure if you are aware, but at a smaller airport like Garrett (K2G4 is its identifier) there there is no control tower, the aircraft are all on a "community" frequency and talk to each other to determine where they are, and who is first in line, etc. Also, for events such as the airshow, they were probably coordinating with the Air Route Traffic Control Center so why could climb a little higher, and have a little more freedom in the skies surrounding the area. The Center that they would talk to would be up in Cleveland Ohio. Wish I could have been there with you guys! I'm not sure what CADS is, but there is a program called CADS that helps amateur modelers design, build, test, and fly remote control planes and helicopters...

It was alot of fun, but I had a question: why is the Air Route Traffic Control Center way up in Ohio? And I wrote that wrong, it was CAMS, not CADS,
R/C club which is part of a bigger club called HighPoint Aviation. Kaleb

The "Center" is in Ohio because it covers a huge geographical area. http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/ato/artcc/
There is a link to a list of all the ones around the country. As you can see, there aren't that many, and just these places listed, cover the entire continental United States. It just so happens that Garrett falls under the southern edge of Cleveland center, and just outside the boundaries of DC center's airspace…
You can also "google" ARTCC and get alot of neat info.
